A rivermouth-shaped beachbreak at the northern tip of the Médoc, Soulac only switches on when the rest of the Gironde coast is overwhelmed. Offshore sandbars built by the Gironde estuary push energy into a hollow, wedging left that rewards patience over frequency. SW to NW swells of 2.5m-plus are the target window, below that, the banks rarely fire. A SE or light S wind holds the face clean. Mid-falling tide is the call for the best tube sections. Intermediates and up only: strong, swirling currents make this genuinely committing when it's pumping. Bottom: beach (rocky section north at Les Piscines). Season: Sep-Mar. Consistency: medium-low, best reserved for big-swell days when Lacanau is shutting down. Water runs one to two degrees colder than Lacanau year-round due to the estuary influence, so pack an extra millimetre of rubber and check the Gironde pollution index before paddling out.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

The spot sees few surfers most weeks, partly because it rarely delivers and partly because the currents filter out the less committed. Weekend crowds stay light. No notable localism reported, but the water hazards self-select the lineup.

Access & Facilities

From Bordeaux, head north through the Médoc toward Pointe de Grave and follow signs to Soulac-sur-Mer. A car park sits centrally near the beach. No facilities on-site. Water quality is variable due to Gironde estuary outflow, check local pollution alerts. Current rips are the primary hazard.

Nearby Alternatives

When Soulac is too big or the currents are unmanageable, the beachbreaks around Lacanau to the south handle smaller swell more consistently. Cap Ferret peninsula spots can also come alive in large NW swells for a change of scenery.
