A high-consistency beachbreak anchored by a jetty on the Vendée coast of Northwest France, Saint Gilles Croix de Vie punches above its modest power rating thanks to reliable swell exposure and a broad size window. SW to NW swell angles work well here, with NE offshore winds tidying up the face. All tides are surfable, though the concrete promenade generates a real backwash at high tide that can double the apparent wave size and create an awkward step on the face. Primarily a beginner and longboarder wave, the forgiving, spilling walls attract surf schools and first-timers, while hotter locals tend to be at sharper breaks elsewhere, keeping pressure light most days. Bottom: beach with jetty influence. Season: year-round. Consistency: high. If the prom section feels crowded, walking south opens up kilometres of open beach peaks with room to breathe.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Weekends can bring crowds around the promenade section, particularly in summer when the town fills up. The lineup stays relaxed, with no meaningful local pressure. Advanced surfers generally migrate to more demanding nearby breaks, leaving this one to beginners, schools, and longboarders. Walk south past the end of the promenade to find emptier peaks on the open beach.

Access & Facilities

Follow signs for Grande Plage from the town centre. A split-level car park sits near the seafront roundabout, street parking is the backup. The surf club on the promenade has toilets and showers. A surf shop, rentals, and surf school are all nearby. Note the estuary and river influence on water quality, particularly after heavy rain.

Nearby Alternatives

When Saint Gilles is too small or closed out, the more exposed beachbreak at St-Jean-de-Monts to the north picks up more swell and offers better peaks for progression surfers. Barbatre on Ile de Noirmoutier is another option in the same swell window when you want more space.
