A sheltered town beach tucked into a small bay within the city of Royan, Pontaillac trades raw power for accessibility and reliability when size finally arrives. It needs SW to NW swell of at least 5-6ft and a high tide window, roughly two hours before to one hour after high, to produce anything worth paddling out for. On those days it delivers short, fun peaks with occasional hollow sections, manageable for intermediate surfers and a magnet for local college students and teenagers on weekends. Bottom: sand. Season: autumn through winter. Consistency: medium. Pollution from stormwater runoff is a known issue after heavy rain, so check conditions before paddling out.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Crowded is the default when conditions align. The central location means easy access for the entire city, and the wave draws students, beginners, and intermediates in numbers. Weekends and school holidays push it to overcrowded. No heavy localism reported, but the sheer volume of surfers in the water makes sessions frustrating. Dawn patrol is the obvious answer.

Access & Facilities

Drive into central Royan and follow the coastal road. Dedicated car park on site. Camping available nearby. Shorter boards suit the punchy, short-walled nature of the peaks. After stormwater events, skip this one.

Nearby Alternatives

If Pontaillac is blown out or over-crowded, Nauzan and Suzac offer similar beachbreak options in the area. The 15km of west-facing beaches around Royan also provide ample peak-hunting when a NE offshore is running. La Coubre is roughly 20km south if more swell power is needed.
