Montalivet's beach breaks deliver consistent sand-bar peaks along the Médoc Atlantic coast of southwest France, sitting north of the better-known Lacanau. Offshore SW to NW swells from 2 to 6ft push peaks up along the beach, with low to mid tide generally producing the cleanest shape. A light NE or E wind cleans things up. The crowd is thin most of the year, even on weekends, making it a genuine pressure-release valve when the more popular breaks further south are heaving. Bottom: sand-bar. Season: autumn through spring. Consistency: moderate, requires a proper groundswell to fire. Multiple peaks spread the lineup thin on good days, but your gear on the beach is vulnerable to theft year-round, so lock valuables in the car and never leave a bag unattended on the sand.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Weekday and weekend crowd levels are consistently quiet. Talk to local surf-shop owners about which sections of beach are working best for the swell and tide combination. The area blooms to a large summer population, but the beach is wide and peaks are scattered. No notable localism signal.

Access & Facilities

Car park sits directly behind the beach with clear views of the peaks. A groyne near the main road into the village can produce a defined left and right when swell and sandbars align. Budget camping is available close to the water, and a daily market in the village covers food and supplies. Surf shops in town carry gear and current conditions intel. Water temperature can drop to around 13°C in winter, so a 5/4 with booties is mandatory off-season.

Nearby Alternatives

Lacanau to the south is the region's most consistent and best-equipped spot, worth the drive when swell is marginal at Montalivet. The Médoc coast holds numerous unnamed sand-bar setups between the two towns that reward exploration on a rising swell.
