A reef-backed left-hand point in the Bay of Douarnenez, Les Roches Blanches (also known as Pointe Leyde or le Leyde) sits roughly 3 km from the town of Douarnenez on Brittany's Finistère coast. It picks up W to NW Atlantic swell funnelling into the bay and prefers offshore E to SE winds. Low to mid tide is the window: at high water the reef loses definition and the wave flattens out. Size range of 3-6ft is where it performs best, delivering long peeling lefts that suit intermediate to advanced surfers looking to link turns on an uncluttered face. Crowd pressure stays moderate outside summer weekends, but French surfing has grown and Douarnenez-area breaks do see competitive lineups on good swells. Bottom: reef over rock. Season: autumn through winter. Consistency: moderate to good in swell season. Bring a 4/3 or thicker wetsuit. Brittany water temperatures drop to 10-11°C in winter, and boots are worth adding from November onward.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Locals know this spot well. Autumn and winter weekdays can be quiet, but any forecast swell on a weekend draws surfers from Douarnenez and Quimper. Respect the takeoff order, don't snake, and you'll be fine. Aggressive behaviour is uncommon but expect a sharp side-eye if you paddle-in without reading the lineup.

Access & Facilities

The break is accessible from the D7 coastal road on the north side of the Bay of Douarnenez. Quimper airport (UIP) is 21 km away. Brest (BES) is 38 km. Douarnenez town has cafés, a boulangerie, and basic supplies. No dedicated surf facilities at the break itself. Watch the rocky entry and exit on the reef, especially at lower tides.

Nearby Alternatives

When the bay isn't cooperating, the Presqu'île de Crozon to the north offers multiple exposed beach breaks and points that handle larger and more direct Atlantic swell. Baie des Trépassés and spots around Pointe du Raz also pick up different swell windows and can fill a flat day in Douarnenez.
