A pounding shorebreak on Île de Ré that earns its reputation through hollow, ledgey peaks firing close to shore on higher tides. Located near Saint-Denis in Northwest France, Les Huttes faces a wide SW-to-NW swell window, works best with E winds, and comes alive from 3-5ft, holding form into the 6ft-plus range. The wave suits confident intermediates and up: short, punchy tubes demand quick decision-making, and rip currents kick in on bigger swells alongside scattered reef sections underfoot. Bottom: beach over rocky shelf. Season: autumn-winter. Consistency: medium. Bring a twin-fin or small thruster for the twitchy shorebreak sections, and check the rip channels before paddling out on any swell above head-high.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Crowds are a regular feature, especially on weekends when the Île de Ré draws surfers from the mainland. It fills fast when conditions are good. Arrive early, read the peaks carefully, and give priority to those already in the water.

Access & Facilities

Cross the bridge to Île de Ré and head north toward Saint-Denis. The carpark for Les Huttes involves a small turning off the main road and is not well-signed. Several campsites operate nearby, making it a workable base for a multi-day stay. No major pollution concerns.

Nearby Alternatives

Les Seulières sits just to the south and offers more of the same beachbreak character when Les Huttes is maxed out or over-crowded. The port's long left-hander provides a completely different ride and is worth checking when a big swell is running.
