A long stretch of Atlantic beach break north of Hourtin, Le Pin Sec delivers hollow, punchy peaks across multiple sandbars with almost no one in the lineup. Works on SW to NW swell from under 1m up to 8ft-plus, with offshore winds from the east. All tides are surfable, though dropping tide can add size and punch. Learners and intermediates dominate on smaller days, but the place empties fast when it gets serious, leaving the better peaks free for those who can handle them. Bottom: sand. Season: autumn through spring for consistency, but works in summer too. Consistency: moderate to good. Pack a step-up if a big swell is forecast, as the reported 5ft-plus conditions hit harder than they look from the dune. WWII bunkers half-buried in the sand are a reliable landmark confirming you've found the right stretch of beach.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Le Pin Sec is one of the least crowded beaches on the Medoc coast. Reports consistently mention looking north and south and seeing nobody. Weekends stay quiet by Atlantic France standards. No localism signal here. Dawn patrol is still worth it in summer, but even midday sessions tend to remain mellow.

Access & Facilities

Reach it from Bordeaux or via the Soulac ferry crossing the Gironde, then head toward Hourtin. Le Pin Sec is signposted roughly 15 minutes north of Hourtin. Park near the dunes and walk over. Basic camping on-site with cheap facilities, plus food stalls and two cafes on the dune in season. No hazards reported beyond buried bunker debris near the waterline.

Nearby Alternatives

Hourtin-Plage, 15 minutes south, offers a similar beach-break setup with more services. Lacanau is an hour south and kicks in with more consistent swell on smaller swells, with rental shops and schools if needed.
