A fast, hollow left over a shallow rock ledge, Le Lizay sits near the lighthouse on Île de Ré and is the most powerful wave the island produces. It needs a solid W to NW swell to wake up, with SE winds keeping it clean, mid to high tide is the sweet spot before the ledge gets too exposed at low. The right off the peak softens at higher tides and offers a shorter, more forgiving option, but the left is the reason to be here. This wave is for experienced surfers only: the ledge is unforgiving, the take-off is steep, and a good day still only runs 50 to 150m before it backs off. Bottom: submerged reef. Season: September through March. Consistency: medium. Pack a step-up for anything over head-high and be ready to abort if the swell drops below the threshold, because average conditions here are genuinely unremarkable.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Weekend crowds are typically light given the location and the demanding conditions. Île de Ré is not a surf hub, so the lineup self-selects: if the swell is truly pumping, expect a handful of experienced local surfers who know the break well. Respect the priority and do not take off blind on the set waves.

Access & Facilities

Cross the bridge onto Île de Ré and follow signs to the lighthouse. Le Lizay is a short distance beyond it on the left. There is a car park nearby. No facilities on site, so bring water and fuel up before leaving the mainland. The reef itself is the main hazard, check the ledge carefully before paddling out.

Nearby Alternatives

When Le Lizay is too small or the swell angle is off, the beachbreaks on the west-facing coast of Ré offer more consistent, accessible waves across a wider skill range. In bigger swells, other spots on the island can handle the wrap-around energy and produce longer, mellower lefts worth investigating.
