A high-consistency beachbreak on the Gironde coast that turns on genuine power when the Atlantic delivers. Le Gurp handles swell from SW through NW, picks up size early, and holds up past 3m when Lacanau is maxed out and blown apart. Offshore easterlies clean up the faces, and the banks work across most tides, giving the spot a long usable window. The left-hander running off the WWII bunkers is the signature section: long, hollow, and deceptively bigger in the water than it looks from the dune car park. Several additional peaks spread the crowd when conditions draw surfers up from the Medoc. Intermediate and above. Current runs strong enough to rule out beginners on bigger days. Bottom: sand. Season: autumn through spring. Consistency: high. Arrive early on any solid swell day, weekend pressure builds fast.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Weekdays stay relatively quiet but swell forecasts pull crowds quickly, especially when spots to the south are swamped. There are reports of attitude from a small local contingent, so read the lineup, take your turn, and keep it respectful. Spreading across the available peaks helps.

Access & Facilities

A central car park sits behind the dunes with direct beach access. Camping is available nearby. There are no major pollution or hazard concerns flagged, though current increases with swell size. The German bunkers are half-submerged at high tide, marking the significant coastal erosion this beach has seen since WWII.

Nearby Alternatives

If Le Gurp is closing out, La Négade to the north or Dépée near the Euronat camp can offer different banks worth checking. Further south, the Forêt du Flamand stretch toward Hourtin hides multiple peaks accessible with a bit of exploration.
