A submerged reef break off the Northwest France coast that only reveals itself when everywhere else has blown out or maxed. Optimum conditions are SW to NW swell, 3-6ft, on a southerly offshore wind, with mid to high tide keeping the shallower sections manageable. The left is the longer ride, the right is shorter, hollower, and punishier. When it's firing, the lineup fills fast because it's one of the only functional options in big swell windows, so expect competition for sets. Bottom: submerged reef. Season: autumn and winter. Consistency: low. The 200m paddle offshore is a filter in itself, but don't let that lull you into complacency about the crowd when conditions align.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Consistency is low, but when La Gamelle switches on during big swells that shut down neighbouring breaks, the crowd is real. It concentrates experienced surfers from across the region into one functional peak. Competent intermediates and above are the baseline. Respect the pecking order, read the sets before paddling for your first wave, and give the regulars their space.

Access & Facilities

Parking is available nearby but there are no beach facilities on site. The paddle out is roughly 200m offshore. Water quality raises no concerns. The reef hazard is the main issue: shallow sections at lower tides demand cautious foot placement on any wipeout.

Nearby Alternatives

When La Gamelle is too small or the swell direction is off, La Torche is the region's most consistent and well-known benchmark peak a short drive away. The beachbreaks around Plouhinec and the Cap Sizun reefs are also worth checking depending on swell angle and size.
