A-frame beach peaks fire off the sandy bottom at La Courance, a beachbreak sitting just south of the Loire estuary near St-Nazaire on the Pays de la Loire coast. SW to NW swells in the 3-6ft range produce the most consistent peaks, with northerly winds holding the faces up cleanest. Low to mid tide is the window to watch: at high tide the break tends to short-cycle and collapse, leaving little room to work. Bodyboarders and skimboarders dominate the lineup on small days, but a rideable shortboard peak can form when the swell organises. The estuary location brings river-influenced water quality, so check after heavy rainfall. Bottom: sand with scattered rocks. Season: Sept through March. Consistency: medium. Pack a 4/3 for autumn and winter sessions and expect short rides rarely exceeding 50m even on the better days.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Weekends draw only a modest number of surfers for this stretch of coast. Bodyboarders and skimboarders tend to outnumber stand-up surfers on smaller swells. Localism is not reported as a significant issue, but standard lineup etiquette applies. Stormy autumn conditions move the crowd north toward St-Brevin or south toward Préfailles, which can thin the lineup here.

Access & Facilities

Parking is available at the campsite directly in front of the break. Access is straightforward off the road after Sainte Marguerite. A camping facility is on site. River and estuary proximity means water quality can deteriorate after rainfall. Check conditions before paddling out following heavy rain upstream.

Nearby Alternatives

If La Courance is closing out, the soft righthand walls of Grand Traict to the north can offer a mellower option at high tide. For more exposed and powerful surf to the south, the reefs and beachbreaks around Préfailles and Pointe St-Gildas are worth checking when swell direction allows.
