A near-perfect hollow right breaking over a shallow submerged reef ledge, Kaolins sits on the Brittany coast near Lorient in northwest France. It needs SW to W swell at 5-6ft minimum to wake up, with a NE offshore wind and mid to high tide to hold its shape. Experts only: the take-off is a near-vertical air-drop onto a fast, sucking ledge, and the bottom turn lands you deep inside the tube with the wall already pitching. There is a left off the peak but it sections frequently, making the right the clear priority. Bottom: submerged reef. Season: autumn through winter. Consistency: medium, thanks to a narrow swell, tide, and wind window. Pack a 4/3 or 5/4 and plan around the tide chart, the window from workable to maxed-out closes fast. A short but intense wave, good-day rides can stretch to 150-300m when everything lines up.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Bodyboarders dominate the lineup and form a tight local crew. Crowds are frequent, and the atmosphere has become noticeably more competitive in recent years. If you are a shortboarder or new to the spot, earn your place before going deep. The level here is high. Showing up underprepared will earn you nothing but drop-ins.

Access & Facilities

Head to Trouillalard and check the cliff to your right. If you see a wild, fast reef breaking below, you are in the right place. Parking is available nearby, and a surf shop is accessible in the area. No significant pollution hazards.

Nearby Alternatives

When Kaolins is too small or the tide is wrong, Le Couregan is another offshore reef nearby that offers longer rides from a large bowl, best at low tide. Guidel's main beach is the most consistent spot in the immediate area and handles a wider range of conditions. Both are worth scouting on the same trip.
