A raw Atlantic beach break on the Médoc coast, Hourtin Plage sits about 80km north of Bordeaux where the Gironde's vast sand dunes meet open ocean. SW to NW swells in the 3-6ft range are the sweet spot, best paired with light easterly winds that groom the peaks and expose the hollow sections this stretch is capable of. Any tide works, though mid tide tends to organize the banks most consistently. This is a genuinely accessible wave for intermediates and up, with a mellow atmosphere outside July and August when summer crowds descend hard. Bottom: sand. Season: autumn through spring for quality. Consistency: moderate, swell-dependent. Arrive at dawn in peak summer months to claim a bank before the 30,000-plus seasonal residents fill the beach. On small or blown-out days, the broader Médoc coastline hides similar setups both north and south, so a short drive will usually turn something up.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Winter and shoulder season see near-empty lineups. Summer flips the script sharply: the village swells from 3,500 to over 30,000 people, and the beach fills accordingly. Locals are welcoming by reputation, but the sheer volume of summer visitors creates natural congestion. Mid-week mornings in June or September offer the best balance of swell potential and space.

Access & Facilities

A direct road runs to Hourtin Plage from the village of Hourtin. Camping is available close to the beach with solid facilities. Small shops and seasonal food options are nearby. No major hazards beyond standard Atlantic rips on bigger swells, scan the beach before paddling out and use the channel where available.

Nearby Alternatives

Lacanau, roughly 30km south, offers more consistent banks and a developed surf infrastructure for days when Hourtin's peaks are disorganized. The broader Médoc dune coast either side of the village hides quieter options worth exploring on foot.
