A beach break on the Finistère coast that hides a serious left when conditions align. Gwendrez sits between Pors Pouhlan and Audierne, tucked along a stretch of exposed Atlantic coastline that catches NW through W groundswell cleanly. Optimal wind is SE to E, offshore, and mid tide tends to organize the banks best. The spot starts showing shape around 3ft and handles overhead-plus before closing out, the better days arrive in the 4-8ft range. Most of the beach is standard peaks, functional but unremarkable, suiting intermediate surfers looking for uncrowded options. The real draw is the left-hander that peels along the rocks on the beach's left flank: tubular, powerful, and short-lived when it fires. Bottom: sand with rocky section on the left flank. Season: October through March. Consistency: moderate, tide and bank-dependent. Come prepared for cold water and bring a step-up if swell is overhead, as the left can push hard with minimal warning.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Gwendrez stays quiet by regional standards, empty most weekdays and still uncrowded on weekends. That low-key status is partly what makes it worth protecting: be discreet, particularly about the left. Respect the lineup when it is working and keep the access road clean.

Access & Facilities

Take the small coastal road rather than the main road. No formal facilities at the break itself. Audierne is close enough for supplies. The water is cold for much of the year: budget for a 4/3 from October through May, a 3/2 shoulder-season. Watch the rocks on the left section at lower tides.

Nearby Alternatives

Pors Pouhlan is the adjacent beach and picks up swell in a similar window, worth checking if Gwendrez's banks are not cooperating. Further north, the breaks around the Crozon peninsula offer more options when W swell is running strong.
