A low-key beach break on the Atlantic-facing west coast of Île d'Oléron, Grand Village delivers punchy peaks when the rest of the island's options feel crowded or flat. It needs a solid W to NW swell of at least 3ft to wake up, handles size well into the 10ft-plus range, and works best on a mid tide with light offshore winds from the E or SE. The break suits surfers of all levels on smaller days, though it rewards intermediates who can read shifting beach-break peaks. Crowds are minimal mid-week and the beach can run near-empty on weekends, which is rare for the region. Bottom: sand. Season: autumn through spring for the most consistent Atlantic groundswell. Consistency: moderate. Bring a 3/2 or 4/3 depending on the season, and arrive early if you want the pick of the sandbanks before wind chop sets in.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

This is one of the quieter stretches on Oléron. Mid-week lineups are near-empty, and even weekends see light traffic compared to the island's more accessible beaches. The vibe is relaxed. Standard surf etiquette applies, no notable localism reported.

Access & Facilities

Cross the toll-free bridge onto Île d'Oléron and follow signs toward Saint-Trojan. From the main roundabout, take the road signed for Grand Village and continue to the beach car park. Basic facilities in the village. Stock up on food and water before heading out, as beachfront amenities are limited outside summer months.

Nearby Alternatives

If Grand Village is too small or the banks are poor, the broader Oléron coastline offers several other beach-break options in the Saint-Trojan area worth checking on the same swell window. Mainland spots near Royan and the Gironde coast are within driving range if a stronger SW swell is running.
