A low-key a-frame beach break on the northwest Brittany coast, Gohaud delivers long, mellow rides on both left and right flanks when Atlantic swell fills in. It needs at least 1 to 1.5m of swell to get going, and the right-hander in particular is a longboard-friendly wall that can run 150 to 300m. The left suits a wider range of craft. Mid to high tide is the window, at low tide the right peak sits directly over rock, making it off-limits until enough water covers the ledge. South winds generate a lateral current that pushes toward the right peak and toward fish traps on the spot's edge, so keep your bearings in the lineup. Bottom: mixed sand and reef. Season: autumn and winter for consistent Atlantic groundswell. Consistency: moderate to low. Bring a longboard or mid-length for the right, and check the tide table before paddling out to avoid the exposed rock section.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Weekdays this place is essentially empty. Weekends attract a handful of surfers, rarely more. No reported localism. Paragliders work the dune updrafts nearby, adding to the low-key atmosphere. Dawn patrol or sunset sessions on incoming tide are the obvious move if you want the place to yourself.

Access & Facilities

Park in the lot above the beach and follow the short dirt track down to the sand, roughly 100m on foot. Do not park on the road that drops to the beach. At high spring tides the beach is almost entirely submerged, so leave valuables in the car. No facilities on the beach. The surrounding landscape is largely untouched, with a single fish trap as the only man-made landmark in view.

Nearby Alternatives

When Gohaud is too small or the swell direction is off, the exposed beaches further south along the Quiberon Peninsula pick up more energy and offer more consistent conditions. The Loire-Atlantique coast to the south also has multiple beach breaks that fire in similar NW swell windows.
