A remote Atlantic beach break on the Morbihan coast of Brittany, Gavres delivers punchy sandbars spread across a long exposed shoreline south of Lorient. The wave needs solid W to NW swell in the 3-8ft range, with offshore winds from the E or SE. Mid to high tide is the sweet spot as low tide pushes the surf uncomfortably far from shore and increases shorebreak risk at the top of the tide. Multiple peaks shift with wind orientation, giving you options when one section closes out. Bottom: sand. Season: autumn through spring. Consistency: low in summer, reliable in winter. Strong rip currents run along this stretch, so pick your paddle-out carefully and stay aware of drift, especially when the swell climbs above head high.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Both weekdays and weekends stay quiet. This is one of those Breton stretches where you can score empty peaks with little competition. The low population density of the area means no serious localism pressure, but the usual respect protocols apply.

Access & Facilities

Drive from Plouhinec toward the Gavres peninsula. The road follows a narrow isthmus with the sandy beach accessible along the way. After your session, the village of Gavres has a bar for a post-surf drink. Bring your own water and snacks as facilities are limited outside the village.

Nearby Alternatives

When Gavres is blown out or flat, the Quiberon peninsula to the south offers more swell exposure and some sheltered options depending on wind direction. Lorient-area breaks to the north can also provide alternatives when the swell angle shifts.
