Baie des Trepasses, 'Bay of Death', sits on the exposed tip of Cap Sizun in Finistère, Brittany, and earns its name through ripping offshore currents and some of the coldest water temps on the northwest French coast. A SW to NW swell window keeps this bay firing with high consistency across a range of sizes, from 2ft beach fun up to 10ft walls. Offshore winds blow from the SE, and the wave works across all tides, though the best long walls come at low tide on a small W swell, while the high-tide rock at the north end produces occasional heavy barrels. Intermediate surfers will find this suits them well, but expect company on small-swell weekends when the crowd spreads across the bay. Bottom: sand/beach. Season: autumn through spring. Consistency: high. Respect the rips and tidal currents here as they are fast and serious, so stay aware of your position in the water at all times.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

This is a popular spot and crowds build noticeably on small-swell weekends when the waves are fun and accessible. The wide bay disperses the pack reasonably well. Localism is not a major reported issue, but peak weekend sessions at 2-3ft will be busy. Dawn patrol or weekday sessions in shoulder season are the smarter play.

Access & Facilities

A car park sits directly at the bay, with restrooms on site. The bay is signposted within the Cap Sizun area. Water temps here are among the coldest in Finistère, so a 5/4mm wetsuit plus hood and booties is realistic through winter. The strong offshore rip currents are the primary hazard. Use the rip to assist your paddle-out but track your lateral drift carefully.

Nearby Alternatives

Ile de Sein, reachable by boat from Audierne, offers reef breaks worth exploring when conditions align. The north coast of Cap Sizun hides additional reefs and beaches for those willing to look. La Torche to the southeast is the benchmark Brittany beachbreak and a logical fallback if Bay of Trepasses is maxing out.
