Pen Hat needs SW to NW swell to fire, with easterly winds keeping faces clean, mid incoming tide is when the peaks sharpen up and develop real punch. Best in the 2-5ft range, this is an intermediate wave, though crowds have been building and the lineup rewards patience. Bottom: sand. Season: autumn through spring. Consistency: high for the region. Show up at dawn on a mid-tide push with an easterly breeze for the best of it.
Crowds are on the rise. For a beach this scenic, the lineup can fill quickly on good weekend swells. Dawn patrol on weekdays is the best strategy to score it with space. Vibe is generally relaxed, but respect the rip channels and give sets priority to those in position.
Follow signs to Pointe du Toulinguet on the Crozon Peninsula. There is a car park at the beach, no facilities on site, so bring water and food. The castle ruins make for an easy landmark. No major hazards or pollution concerns reported.
When Pen Hat is maxed out or too small, La Palue nearby picks up more swell and handles bigger conditions. Other protected coves and reefs on the Crozon Peninsula offer options when westerly winds make the main beach messy.
