Exposed to the full force of the English Channel, Wimereux is a beach break town 20km south of Calais that picks up SW to NW swells reliably through autumn and winter. Works best on W/SW swells from 2-6ft at mid to high tide, with SE winds keeping faces clean. The nearby reef at Pointe des Oies adds a more powerful option on SW swells, though strong W winds frequently shut it down above 20km/h. Beginners and intermediates will find the main beach peaks manageable most days, though weekends draw crowds. Bottom: sand. Season: Sep-Apr. Consistency: medium. Arrive early on weekends, particularly when a clean SW swell is running, as the lineup fills fast from the local surf community and day-trippers from Calais and Boulogne.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

The beach draws a mix of learners and intermediates from the region. Weekends get noticeably crowded when conditions align. Localism is not reported as heavy, but respect the lineup and be patient on peak days. Dawn patrol on Saturday morning is the obvious move.

Access & Facilities

Parking is available in the town carpark. No surf-specific facilities on the beach, so bring your own water and snacks. The town has cafes and a seafront promenade. No pollution or hazard concerns flagged for the main beach.

Nearby Alternatives

When Wimereux is blown out or flat, Boulogne-sur-Mer sits just to the south with jetty-assisted peaks on NE winds. Wissant, roughly 20km north toward Cap Gris-Nez, is the most consistent stretch on the northern France coast and handles bigger W/NW swells better.
