A wide beachbreak zone on the Cotentin Peninsula, Hatainville sits between the rocky headland of Le Poux to the north and the Carteret lighthouse to the south, backed by a long stretch of sand dunes. It works best on SW to NW swells from 3-8ft, with an easterly offshore keeping faces clean. Mid to high tide is the sweet spot before the banks shallow out and currents become a factor. This is an intermediate wave: strong rips and shifting peaks mean it rewards surfers who can read water, and the weekend crowd confirms the locals know what they have. Bottom: sand. Season: autumn through spring. Consistency: medium. Strong currents are the main hazard here, so pick an entry point near a natural channel and stay aware of drift during bigger sets.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Weekend crowds are a regular feature, particularly when clean conditions align with a decent swell. The broader Cotentin zone spreads surfers across multiple peaks, which helps dilute pressure. Localism is not flagged as a concern, but early sessions on weekdays will give you more room to move.

Access & Facilities

A car park is available at the beach, and camping facilities are nearby, making this a practical base for a multi-day session. The dune-backed beach is easy to access from the car park. No pollution or hazard concerns beyond the currents noted above. For beginners or small-swell days, Carteret just to the south has mellower peaks readable from a boardwalk.

Nearby Alternatives

When Hatainville is onshore or blown out, the harbour area at Carteret can offer shelter from westerly winds. Vauville, further south on the peninsula, runs for 16km and works on any W swell, giving options when the Cotentin needs a different angle.
