A raw, exposed beach break on the north Finistère coast, La Mauvaise Greve picks up open Atlantic swell that most sheltered spots miss entirely. It works best on NW to W swell from 5ft upward, with offshore winds from the SE to S, and is genuinely rideable at both high and low tide, though the rocks demand careful attention at lower water. On a solid day the wave can stretch to 300-500m of rideable face, but when the swell hits 3m or more this place shifts register entirely and becomes serious business. It suits intermediate to advanced surfers in average conditions, but experienced surfers and beyond when size is up. Bottom: beach and rock mixed. Season: autumn through early spring. Consistency: moderate, swell-dependent. Paddle-out timing and tide awareness are non-negotiable here: scout from the beach and know the rock positions before you commit to a session.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

The nearby island peak at Sieck is a known locals-only zone and is not the same break. La Mauvaise Greve can draw regional surfers on good swells, but north Finistère sees nothing like the crowd pressure of Biarritz or the Landes coast. Respect the lineup and the locals who know this stretch well.

Access & Facilities

Head to Moguériec in north Finistère. Signage points to the beach from the village. Facilities are minimal in this part of Brittany, so bring water and food. A 4/3 wetsuit is the minimum year-round, in winter months, 5/4 with booties is standard for these waters.

Nearby Alternatives

North Finistère has several exposed Atlantic-facing beaches that pick up similar swell when La Mauvaise Greve is either too big or too messy. If the wind is wrong here, a short drive to a more sheltered bay on the Léon coast can offer cleaner, smaller surf.
