A fickle Norman point break that punches above its weight when Atlantic swells finally arrive, Etretat sits beneath dramatic chalk cliffs on the Normandy coast of northern France. It needs a solid NW to W swell, 3-5ft minimum, and works best at low to mid tide when the point starts to shape up. Offshore winds blow from the SE, which aligns with the region's dominant land breezes in autumn and winter. Crowds are a real factor: weekdays are busy, weekends border on chaos given that Paris is only two hours away. Bottom: mixed reef and rock. Season: autumn through winter, October to February. Consistency: low to moderate, several flat stretches are normal between swells. Parking is genuinely difficult, especially on weekends, so arriving early is not optional. Water temperatures drop hard in winter, plan on a 5/4 with boots and gloves if you're surfing November through February.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Etretat draws a wide range of surfers from across northern France and day-trippers from Paris, which makes weekends unworkable for anyone wanting space. Localism is not reported as heavy, but the sheer volume of people in a short, tight break creates its own friction. Dawn patrol on a weekday is the only real answer.

Access & Facilities

Drive into Etretat town and head for the main beach. Parking is limited and fills fast, especially in autumn when swells arrive. The town has cafes, restaurants, and basic amenities within walking distance. Water is cold and the bottom is rocky, so reef booties are recommended even in the warmer months. No dedicated surf infrastructure on site.

Nearby Alternatives

When Etretat is flat or overwhelmed, the broader Seine-Maritime coastline has scattered beach and reef options that respond to similar NW swell windows. Check spots further west along the Normandy coast toward Dieppe or the Cotentin Peninsula, which picks up more consistent Atlantic exposure.
