A hollow, powerful beachbreak punching above its weight on the far northwestern tip of Brittany, Le Gouerou delivers fast, bowly peaks that reward expert-level surfing when the conditions align. SW to N swell windows keep it in play through autumn and winter, with E winds going offshore to clean up the face. Mid tide is the sweet spot: at high water the exit onto rocks gets genuinely dangerous, and strong currents around those rocks make paddling back out a serious workout at 2m-plus. The lineup draws bodyboarders alongside shortboarders for good reason, the hollow, sucky shape suits boards with pivot and pop. Bottom: beach. Season: autumn-winter. Consistency: medium. Respect the locals hard here, turn up in small groups, read the room, and under no circumstances ignore rising tide warnings.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Localism here is real and documented. Arrive solo or as a pair, show respect, and you should be fine. Weekends push the lineup to crowded. Dawn patrol on a mid-week swell is the honest play. Bodyboarders have deep roots at this spot, treat them accordingly.

Access & Facilities

Follow signs for Lampaul-Plouarzel to reach the break. There is a car park but no facilities on site, bring water and food. The rock exit at high tide is the primary hazard: plan your session around the tide chart and do not linger as the water rises. No pollution concerns noted.

Nearby Alternatives

If Le Gouerou is maxed out or the crowd is too heavy, the reefbreak at l'Anse de Bertheaume offers a left-hand option nearby, and Trez-Hir produces defined high-tide peaks worth checking on the same run. St Pab's hollow shorebreak fires up on strong NW swell for bodyboarders looking for a different hit.
