A mid-to-high tide beachbreak on the Finistère coast of North Brittany, Boutrouilles holds shape better than most of its neighbors thanks to patches of underlying reef locking sand into workable banks. Best on W to NW swells in the 2-5ft range with a SE wind keeping faces clean. The spot draws both surfers and bodyboarders, the latter in particular hunting the wedges that form near the granite rock sections. Crowds arrive in July and August but summer coincides with the flattest, most onshore stretch of the year, so the lineup pressure rarely matters when the waves are good. Bottom: sandy beach over reef patches. Season: autumn through spring. Consistency: medium. Dawn sessions in October and November give you the best shot at swell with light winds before the westerly onshores kick in.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

The atmosphere is generally friendly. Summer brings more people but the dominant wind and flat swells mean the real sessions happen in the off-season when the crowd thins out considerably. No localism concerns noted, but standard respect protocols apply.

Access & Facilities

A car park sits at or near the beach. Camping is available on-site, making this a practical base for multi-day surf trips through the Finistère coast. Stock up on supplies before arriving as facilities in the immediate area are limited beyond the campground.

Nearby Alternatives

When Boutrouilles is too small or onshore, the broader Kerlouan area offers additional options. Spots to the south toward Brest and north toward Roscoff can provide different swell exposure and wind angles worth checking on the same drive.
