Beachbreak peaks flanking the base of Cap Fréhel's multi-coloured cliffs come alive on a decent W or NW swell, producing hollow bowls and fast walls that reward patient waits through the region's frequent flat spells. La Grève d'En Bas is the standout section, best avoided at low tide when it loses shape, and needs a clean S wind to behave. SW winds make it messy. The wave holds from under 1ft up to 3ft-plus, but the crowd thins out noticeably in the upper range as the hollow sections punish inexperienced riders. All tides function, though mid to high produces the best defined peaks. Bottom: sand. Season: autumn through winter. Consistency: medium. When size is up, this spot is not for beginners despite its general classification, and locals defending a long-awaited swell will enforce that point without much diplomacy.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Locals nickname this place "Cap Carnival" for a reason. A flat spell of any length sends the regional crew into a frenzy, and when swell finally arrives, the peak fills with 50-plus surfers on a relatively short ride. Dropping in will not be tolerated. The vibe on the beach is reportedly friendly, but the water can be tense. Dawn patrol mid-week is the obvious move.

Access & Facilities

Reach the beach via the D34 road running toward Cap Fréhel from Sables d'Or les Pins. Free parking is available. Restrooms on site. No water quality concerns flagged. The wide sandy beach itself is easy to navigate, and the surrounding cliffs provide some wind shelter depending on direction.

Nearby Alternatives

La Fosse at Pléhérel beach nearby is more consistent but less impressive in quality. If the crowd at Cap Fréhel is unbearable, St Malo's main beach handles SW storm swell and offers peaks near la Hoguette groin. Perros-Guirec delivers a hollow city beachbreak on westerly storms for those willing to drive further.
