A beachbreak at the Touques estuary mouth in Normandy, Trouville trades on convenience rather than quality. Needs a solid W to NW swell of 5-6ft to get going, with southerly winds keeping it clean. Mid to high tide is optimal, low tide drains the life out of it. Beginners and intermediates will find it workable on the right day, though the lineup is rarely crowded and the waves stay short. Bottom: sand. Season: autumn through winter. Consistency: medium. Pollution from the Touques river is a real concern, so check water quality before paddling out.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Weekends see only a few surfers even in peak swell season. The Viking Surf Club works the estuary and surrounding peaks, and the lineup is relaxed with no notable localism pressure. A mellow introduction to surfing the Baie de la Seine.

Access & Facilities

It's the town beach of Trouville-sur-Mer, straightforward to find but parking is limited and no dedicated surf facilities are available. Pick up water and food in town. The Touques river introduces commercial pollution, check local conditions after rain. No significant physical hazards reported.

Nearby Alternatives

When Trouville is too small, the Viking Surf Club's 'Le Phare' peak at the estuary can add size via the river's swell amplification effect. Further afield, Etretat to the northeast is a more consistent beachbreak option, and the Cotentin Peninsula picks up significantly more swell when Baie de la Seine is flat.
