A reliable beach break on the Iroise coast of Brittany, Penfoul sits west of Brest and picks up Atlantic swell that larger headlands block from more sheltered spots. It needs 1.5-2m of swell to get going and handles up to 3m+ before things get messy. Offshore winds are typically easterly given the westerly exposure, and it performs across all tide stages, though a bonus right-hand point break activates on the high. Short rides under 50m are the norm even on good days, so expect punchy, workable sections rather than long walls. Suitable for all skill levels, though beginners should treat bigger swells with respect. Weekday crowds are light, but weekends draw the Brest surf population and the lineup fills up fast. Bottom: sand. Season: autumn through spring. Consistency: moderate to good in swell season. Time your visit for a weekday ground swell and you will likely have the water largely to yourself.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Weekday sessions are typically quiet with a handful of surfers sharing peaks. Weekends attract the broader Brest surf community and the beach fills up quickly, particularly in autumn swell season. The vibe is generally relaxed, but standard lineupcourtesy applies: respect the peak rotation and acknowledge the regulars.

Access & Facilities

Reach Penfoul from Brest via the D105 through St-Renan toward Argenton. Parking is available roadside near the beach. Facilities are basic in this part of Finistère, so bring your own water and food. Water quality is generally good. Watch for rips in larger swell, particularly along the flanks of the beach.

Nearby Alternatives

The Iroise coast offers several beach breaks within a short drive that pick up similar Atlantic swell. When Penfoul is too small or too crowded, checking the beaches further north toward the Abers or south toward Crozon is worth the extra kilometres.
