A punchy beachbreak peak on the Cotentin Peninsula that holds shape from ankle-high to a solid 10ft, Le Rozel draws weekend crowds for good reason. It works best on SW to NW swells with an easterly offshore wind, mid to high tide filling in the banks. The quality window is real but narrow: a WSW head-high pulse on an incoming tide with a light morning land breeze is the sweet spot. Intermediate surfers will get the most from it, though beginners can find their feet on smaller days. On weekends with any swell in the water, expect a packed lineup where locals who know every section of the bowl will out-position visitors consistently. Bottom: sand. Season: September through March. Consistency: medium. Arrive early on weekday mornings if you want space, or head north to Sciotot where the crowd thins out considerably even if the wave is less organised.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Localism is real here. The peak at the end of the beach is claimed hard by regulars who know the banks cold. Visitors dropping in or paddling straight to the main peak on a busy weekend will find themselves wave-starved. Give respect, take your turn, and consider that Sciotot to the north offers a quieter, more welcoming atmosphere if the vibe feels heavy.

Access & Facilities

A car park sits directly at the beach. Camping nearby makes it a viable overnight destination for a swell chase. No notable pollution or coastal hazards flagged, though north Normandy water temps run cold autumn through spring: a 4/3 or 5/4 wetsuit with boots is standard kit from October to April.

Nearby Alternatives

When Le Rozel is blown out or overcrowded, Sciotot at the north end of the bay is the immediate go-to for a quieter session. For a longer drive, the Vauville stretch offers 16km of beach that picks up any W swell, and during strong SW swell and wind combos a run east toward Cherbourg can reward with protected peaks.
