A hollow, fast beach break on the exposed Atlantic-facing coast north of Brest, Kerlouan fires when everywhere else is too small. SW to NW swells hit directly, and offshore winds from the E to SE clean up the faces. Mid to high tide is the sweet spot, though be cautious on high tide with big coefficient swells, when the short-break character can turn genuinely dangerous. Works from 3ft and handles 10ft+ on its best days. Best suited to experienced surfers who can read a shifty peak and manage a heavy shore dump. Bottom: sand over reef mix. Season: autumn through winter. Consistency: moderate, swell-dependent. The local village cluster around Boutrouilles is where the action is concentrated, and weekends pull a crowd, so midweek dawn patrol sessions in autumn will find you a far emptier lineup than a Saturday in November.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Weekdays see few surfers in the water, making it a reasonable option for experienced travellers during the week. Weekends get noticeably busier, especially during prime autumn swell season. Respect the regulars, read the peak rotation, and avoid snaking, since this is a tight community on a smaller coastline.

Access & Facilities

Head north from Brest to the village of Kerlouan, then follow signs toward the coast. Asking locally or following surfer vehicles toward Boutrouilles is the practical approach. Facilities are minimal at the beach itself, so bring water and food. The rocky shore and shifting sand banks can create strong rips on bigger swells.

Nearby Alternatives

The broader Finistère coastline offers multiple beach and reef options that respond to similar swell windows. If Kerlouan is too big or too small, check spots further along the north Brest coast that pick up or shed swell differently depending on angle and size.
