A fast, hollow left peeling along a concrete jetty on the eastern flank of Cherbourg's massive harbour, Collignon fires rarely but delivers genuine quality when the stars align. It needs a solid SW to NW swell of at least 8ft to wake up, with southerly winds to hold the face clean. Mid to high tide keeps the sections linking, too low and it backs off into mush. Intermediate to advanced surfers only: the wave moves quickly, the crowd is tight-knit and local pressure is real on the rare days it fires. Bottom: mixed (jetty structure plus sand). Season: October through March. Consistency: low, working fewer than ten days a year by most local accounts. Bring your best shortboard and realistic expectations, this is not a spot to plan a trip around, but if you are already in the Cherbourg area and a big NW swell is running, prioritise getting here at first light before the locals fill the lineup. Harbour proximity means water quality is a genuine concern, check pollution advisories before paddling out.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Locals know exactly how rare good days are here and they show up fast when conditions align. The Community reports are unambiguous: expect a territorial reception. A few surfers constitutes a crowd at this break. Respect the hierarchy, stay out of priority situations, and keep a low profile. Dawn patrol on a weekday is your best window for a less pressured session.

Access & Facilities

From Cherbourg, head east along the coast road through Tourlaville and follow signs for Collignon. The spot sits at the right-hand extremity of Cherbourg harbour, around 7km east of the city centre. There is a car park, but no facilities on site. Water quality is affected by runoff from Cherbourg's commercial harbour, avoid after heavy rain. No surf shops or rentals at the break itself.

Nearby Alternatives

If Collignon is not working, the Cotentin peninsula has options. Vauville on the west coast offers 16km of beach breaks that fire on any W swell and is far more consistent. Further south, the Cotentin's quality beachbreaks come alive on solid NW swells and hold shape to overhead-plus.
