Puerto Viejo's signature reefbreak punches well above its latitude, delivering thick, cylindrical barrels over shallow coral that earns it the nickname 'Caribbean Pipeline.' NE to SE swells, solid from 5ft and capable of holding well past double-overhead, lock into two distinct peaks: a tight First Peak bowl where the takeoff is steep and reserved for committed tuberiders, and a slightly more forgiving Second Peak just north where the pack spreads out but you're still dropping under the lip. Best winds are southerly, ideally early morning before the trades fill in. Experts only at First Peak. Crowds are persistent and the local and expat crew is territorial, so humility counts. Bottom: shallow, sharp coral reef. Season: mid-winter NE swells peak December through March, with July hurricane pulses as a wildcard. Consistency: medium. Watch the locals for the correct paddle-out line and do not get caught inside on the reef.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Localism here is real and rated high. Locals and established expats control the First Peak takeoff zone. Arriving surfers are expected to read the hierarchy, wait their turn at Second Peak, and show respect before pushing into the better sets. Dawn sessions reduce friction somewhat, but when it's firing, the lineup is competitive by default. Bring patience and leave attitude at the car.

Access & Facilities

Park at the south end of Puerto Viejo de Talamanca. The break is walkable from town. A surf shop is nearby for wax and basics. Water quality is generally acceptable but commercial activity in the area means occasional pollution after heavy rain. Urchins and sharp coral are the main physical hazards. Booties are worth considering for reef protection on entry and exit.

Nearby Alternatives

When Salsa Brava is too heavy or too crowded, Playa Cocles a mile south offers mellow, beginner-friendly beachbreak peaks. Long Shoal, the outer reef, has steep fast take-offs ideal for advanced surfers willing to paddle or boat out. Punta Uva a few miles further south provides a semi-fickle right point for intermediate surfers looking for more room.
