Scattered peaks along a submerged sandy reef make Punta Uva one of the more technically interesting waves on Costa Rica's southern Caribbean coast, sitting just east of Puerto Viejo. N to NE swells are the ticket, ideally in the 3-6ft range, with SW offshore winds keeping faces clean. The shorebreak can get hollow and sucky when swell hits the shallower sections, rewarding surfers who commit to late drops rather than those who hesitate. Works on all tides, which adds convenience, though size above 8ft turns the scattered peaks chaotic. Bottom: submerged sandy reef. Season: Caribbean swell season peaks Sep-Jan. Consistency: medium. Bring a board you trust in critical sections, a shorter, responsive shortboard handles the sudden hollow sections better than a floaty mid-length. The point outside occasionally lines up into playful right walls when conditions organise, offering a more forgiving option if the shorebreak is unforgiving.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Crowds here are occasional rather than constant. The intermediate-level wave filters out beginners, but the proximity to Puerto Viejo means weekends can bring extra surfers. The lineup is generally relaxed by Caribbean standards. Nearby Salsa Brava pulls performance surfers away, which keeps this spot from getting too competitive.

Access & Facilities

No facilities on site. Punta Uva sits along the coastal road south of Puerto Viejo, with free roadside parking available. The beach itself is part of a calm stretch of coast. Water quality is generally fine. Watch for sea urchins on the reef sections, especially at lower water levels.

Nearby Alternatives

When Punta Uva is flat or blown out, Playa Cocles to the north offers mellow beachbreak peaks suited to a wider range of abilities. Salsa Brava in Puerto Viejo handles bigger Caribbean swells and is one of the most powerful reef waves in Central America for those ready to step up.
