A chunky reef left at the north end of Limón's main beach, Playa Bonita delivers slamming hollow sections when a strong NE swell fills in. Optimal conditions are NE to E swell, 2-10ft, with southerly offshores keeping faces clean. Mid-tide is the sweet spot for the left reef: too high and the beachbreak closes out at head-high, too low and you're dealing with the short, sucky Los Tumbos rights over a rocky minefield that bodyboarders favour. This is an experienced-surfer wave with localism, the beach sees consistent crowds being the main stretch for Limón. Bottom: submerged reef and beach mix. Season: Caribbean NE swells run Oct-Feb with secondary activity spring. Consistency: medium. E swells tend to close the left out, so wait for true NE pulses and note the earthquake-lifted reef (raised 2-3ft in the 1991 magnitude-7.4 quake) makes for unpredictable air drops on bigger days.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Playa Bonita is Limón's main beach and draws consistent crowds. Reports flag this as a localised spot, paddle out with awareness, sit wide when in doubt, and don't snake. Dawn patrol on weekdays is your best chance at a less competitive lineup. The hollow left attracts experienced riders, respect the pecking order.

Access & Facilities

No dedicated parking or facilities on site. Playa Bonita is the primary beach for the city of Limón, so transport options into town are close. No food or rental infrastructure at the break itself, bring water and supplies. The 1991 earthquake permanently altered the reef topography, so treat the bottom as unpredictable, especially on bigger swells.

Nearby Alternatives

When Playa Bonita is maxed or too crowded, the rivermouth banks at Barco Quebrado (Rio del Banano) often hold better-shaped peaks. A short trip up the coast puts you near Isla Uvita's long lefthander, which picks up everything. Further south, Salsa Brava in Puerto Viejo is the region's heavy-hitter for experienced surfers chasing proper barrels.
