A submerged reef peak on Costa Rica's Caribbean coast, Roca Alta serves up punchy, mid-length walls when the Atlantic delivers NE to SE swell in the 2-8ft range. Offshore winds blow from the SW, cleaning up faces that can get hollow and snappy depending on swell angle and sand movement over the reef. It suits intermediate surfers reasonably well, and crowds are manageable but not guaranteed to be empty. Bottom: submerged reef. Season: Dec-Mar for peak NE trade swell. Consistency: medium. Come at a size when the whole lineup from Salsa Brava to Punta Uva is working, and you'll likely share fewer waves here than at the more obvious peaks nearby.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Crowds show up sometimes, especially when Puerto Viejo locals scout the reef on solid NE swells. The lineup is generally relaxed by Caribbean standards, but respect the local crew who know the takeoff zone. Dawn sessions will get you cleaner waves and more space before the tradewind fills in.

Access & Facilities

No facilities on site. Free parking in the area. The Caribbean coast road through the Puerto Viejo corridor connects most breaks within a short drive. Bring water, reef booties if your feet are soft, and pack out your trash. No water quality concerns reported.

Nearby Alternatives

When Roca Alta isn't firing, the beachbreaks at Playa Cocles offer mellow, beginner-friendly fun just down the road. For more serious surfers chasing power, Salsa Brava to the north is the benchmark of Caribbean Costa Rica and handles serious swell in cylindrical form.
