A fickle reef-and-beach break inside the Gandoca-Manzanillo Wildlife Refuge, at the end of the road south of Puerto Viejo on Costa Rica's Caribbean coast. When a solid NE swell arrives, the peak throws up a peeling right over mixed sand and reef plus a shorter left off the same takeoff zone. It needs size to wake up, typically 6ft-plus on the face, and SSW offshores to groom it properly. Caribbean swell windows are inconsistent, so timing is everything here. The wave suits intermediates comfortable reading reef, not first-timers. The remote refuge location keeps the lineup nearly empty on good days, which is the real payoff. Bottom: mixed reef and sand. Season: November through March, with February the most reliable peak. Consistency: fickle, needs large NE groundswell. Bring a longer board than you think you need since the wave has juice when it's on but can close out fast on the inside sections.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Manzanillo's distance from Puerto Viejo and the refuge boundary keep numbers low. On a working swell you may share the peak with a handful of travellers staying locally. The vibe is relaxed but treat the village and refuge with care, this is a small community with few visitor services.

Access & Facilities

The break is at the southern end of the coast road from Puerto Viejo, roughly 13km. Park in the village and walk to the beach. Facilities are minimal: a few small restaurants and a couple of guesthouses in town, no dedicated surf shops. Carry water and reef first-aid basics. Watch for urchins on the reef, submerged rocks on the paddle-out, and rip currents when swell is running. Shark sightings are occasional but uncommon.

Nearby Alternatives

Punta Uva, 5km north, picks up smaller NE swells and offers a softer beach break option when Manzanillo is too small or too big. Puerto Viejo's Salsa Brava, a short drive further north, is the region's heaviest reef break and fires on the same NE swell, better suited to experienced surfers chasing size.
