A powerful beach break just 500m south of Puerto Viejo, Playa Cocles delivers long-running sandbar walls on the Caribbean coast of Costa Rica. It needs solid swell to wake up, typically 8-10ft to get it going, and holds through 12ft-plus. SW to SE groundswell is the motor here, with offshore trades from the west making early mornings the cleanest window. Mid to high tide shapes the sandbars best and smooths out the steep entry. This is a wave for experienced surfers who can handle fast-pitching take-offs and rip-current awareness. Weekday crowds stay light, which is rare for a wave this good. Bottom: sand over sandbars. Season: peaks Caribbean swell season, late September through November. Consistency: moderate, swell-dependent. Paddle out early, watch the rip currents running along the shore, and scope the sandbars before committing to a peak.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Weekday and weekend crowds both run light by regional standards. The wave's size requirement naturally filters the lineup. Localism is low-key, but drop-ins on long walls are a quick way to sour the session. Read the peak, call your wave early, and the vibe stays easy.

Access & Facilities

Head 500m south of Puerto Viejo on the coastal road. Puerto Viejo itself has food, water, board rentals, and surf shops within easy reach. Water is warm year-round, boardies or a light rashguard standard outside of bigger swell days. Rip currents are a real hazard here, identify the channels before paddling out and use them to get beyond the break.

Nearby Alternatives

When Cocles is too big or too small, Puerto Viejo town break handles smaller swells closer to the village. Salsa Brava, the heavy reef break right in Puerto Viejo, fires on similar swells for experienced surfers chasing barrels.
