A powerful beach break just 500m south of Puerto Viejo, Playa Cocles delivers long-running sandbar walls on the Caribbean coast of Costa Rica. It needs solid swell to wake up, typically 8-10ft to get it going, and holds through 12ft-plus. SW to SE groundswell is the motor here, with offshore trades from the west making early mornings the cleanest window. Mid to high tide shapes the sandbars best and smooths out the steep entry. This is a wave for experienced surfers who can handle fast-pitching take-offs and rip-current awareness. Weekday crowds stay light, which is rare for a wave this good. Bottom: sand over sandbars. Season: peaks Caribbean swell season, late September through November. Consistency: moderate, swell-dependent. Paddle out early, watch the rip currents running along the shore, and scope the sandbars before committing to a peak.
