A rivermouth beachbreak at the Rio del Banano outflow, Barco Quebrado sits along the largely undiscovered 60km stretch of Caribbean Costa Rica coast between Puerto Limón and Cahuita. NE to SE swells fill in consistently, with SW offshore winds cleaning up the face. Best from 2-5ft, though the spot will handle up to 6ft when a solid Carib swell rolls through. The rivermouth setup produces better-shaped banks than most of the surrounding beachbreaks on this stretch, making it worth a stop for beginners and intermediates looking for uncrowded waves. Bottom: sand. Season: year-round with northeast swells peaking in winter months. Consistency: medium. Be aware of river outflow pollution, especially after heavy rain inland, when the estuary discharge can affect water quality significantly.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

This stretch of coast stays quiet. Crowd pressure doesn't really build until you reach Cahuita, where the national park draws visitors but still skews toward hikers and divers over surfers. Barco Quebrado sees almost no one most sessions, so lineups are relaxed and unhurried.

Access & Facilities

Free parking is available and the beach has basic camping facilities, making it viable for self-sufficient travelers moving up or down the coast. River outflow pollution is a real consideration after rain events. Skip the water if the river is running brown. Pack your own food and drinking water.

Nearby Alternatives

When Barco Quebrado is flat or the river is running dirty, the beachbreaks at Westfalia offer similar low-key conditions along the same stretch. Push south to Cahuita for the main beachbreak or, if you're experienced, scope the powerful reef setup at Salsa Brava in Puerto Viejo.
