A black sand beach break paired with a fun left-hand reef point sits inside Cahuita National Park on Costa Rica's Caribbean coast, making it one of the better options when the Pacific side goes flat in summer. NE swells drive the action here, with the left point needing mid to low tide to show its best shape while the beach break performs well at high tide. W winds keep it clean. Head-high to overhead is the sweet spot, and conditions align most reliably during Caribbean winter months, roughly November through March. Intermediate surfers will feel at home across both setups, and the beach break sections stay relatively uncrowded even when the point fills up. Bottom: Sand at beach break, reef/sand at point. Season: Nov to Mar. Consistency: Moderate. Pack reef booties if your feet are soft and check the rip current before committing to the paddle-out.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

The left point draws local surfers and gets competitive when it is on, so paddle out with awareness and earn your waves. The beach break absorbs additional visitors without pressure. Costa Rica's Caribbean side generally runs friendlier than the Pacific hotspots, but the point lineup rewards respect and patience rather than burning sets.

Access & Facilities

Park at the Cahuita National Park entrance or along the main beach road and walk down to the black sand beach. Water quality is fair with some documented sewage issues, so avoid surfing here after heavy rain. The national park setting means wildlife and trail access are close at hand.

Nearby Alternatives

Puerto Viejo, a short drive south, has more concentrated reef options including Salsa Brava for experienced surfers chasing heavier barrels on the same NE swell window. When Caribbean swells disappear entirely, a flight or drive back to the Pacific coast opens up consistent beach breaks and point options year-round.
