A submerged coral-and-sand reef at the south end of Punta Cocles, Little Shoal serves up predominantly right-handers with a handful of lefts that carry less punch than the heavier reefs nearby. It needs NE to E swell, works across all tides, and handles 1-6ft with SW winds keeping faces clean. Intermediates will find it the right level of challenge: more technical than the mellow Playa Cocles beachbreak but nowhere near the intensity of Salsa Brava a short distance up the coast. Bottom: submerged reef, coral and sand mix. Season: Caribbean swell season, typically Nov through Mar. Consistency: medium. Worth noting, the 1991 earthquake raised local reefs 0.6-1m, which permanently altered the character of several breaks in the area, so expect some irregularity in the reef structure compared to older reports. Reef shoes or booties are a smart call on the paddle-out.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Crowds are intermittent. The area around Punta Cocles draws a mix of traveling surfers and locals spread across multiple breaks, which keeps any single lineup from getting too saturated. Respect the locals who know the reef well and give priority on the better sets.

Access & Facilities

Free parking is available but no facilities on-site. The south end of Punta Cocles is the reference point. Bring your own water and snacks. Puerto Viejo de Talamanca is the nearest town for food, board repair, and accommodation. No pollution concerns flagged, but the earthquake-altered reef means the bottom can surprise you.

Nearby Alternatives

When Little Shoal is flat or crowded, the beachbreaks at Playa Cocles offer a more forgiving session for warm-up or progression. For more size and intensity, Salsa Brava in Puerto Viejo is the region's benchmark reef and absorbs the same Caribbean swells with considerably more consequence.
