Sul is the main surf beach in Ilhéus, Bahia, serving up a spread of named peaks along a long stretch of coast that works year-round. The standout peak is Me Ache at the north end of the beach, which throws strong, tubular waves up to 6ft on E swell. Consistent across most swell directions, easterly swells push the best shape into Me Ache and sharpen up the other peaks including Ponta and Pedra da Cachorra further down the beach. Offshore wind from the W cleans up the faces. Intermediates will find plenty to work with across the beach, advanced surfers should target Me Ache when E swell fills in. Bottom: mixed reef and beach. Season: year-round. Consistency: moderate to good. The reefs that run along sections of the beach form natural rock pools at low tide, which are worth watching on the drop to avoid surprise ledges on the inside.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

This is a busy beach. Cabanas, swimmers, and local surfers all share the same stretch of coast, and the water gets crowded on good days, particularly at Me Ache. Dawn patrol is the best bet to get a less chaotic session. The Ilhéus Surf Master and Longboard Contest is held here annually, which draws extra attention around the event period.

Access & Facilities

Ilhéus is well-serviced with food, water, and beach infrastructure directly at Sul. The cabanas along the beach provide shade and food. Reef hazards are present throughout the break, so check the bottom before paddling out, particularly at low tide when natural pools form between ledges.

Nearby Alternatives

If Sul is blown out or too crowded, the Ilhéus coastline and southern Bahia offer further beach breaks to explore on shifting conditions. North and south of town, smaller and less busy stretches occasionally fire on the right swell.
