A super-long walling right at the mouth of the River Contas puts Boca da Barra in a class of its own on the Brazilian coast, sitting outside Concha Beach near Itacaré in Bahia. SE to S swell at low to mid tide is the formula, with offshore SW winds grooming rides that regularly push 200-500m and can exceed 600m on the best days. The paddle out runs 20-30 minutes on normal days, and that distance alone filters out most of the lineup. Experienced surfers with strong paddling and ocean awareness only: dropping tides generate horrendous rips, sharks are present this far offshore, and surfing alone is genuinely risky. Bottom: beach (rivermouth sandbar). Season: March through October. Consistency: medium. Bring a high-volume shortboard or step-up for overhead days, and never paddle out on a falling tide in size without a clear exit plan.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Crowding is rarely an issue. The long paddle, remote lineup, and reputation for rips keep casual surfers away. Weekends can bring a small crew but the spot generally sits empty. The vibe in the water is relaxed when surfers do make it out.

Access & Facilities

Walkable from Itacaré town center or from Concha Beach with no cost to access. Free parking is available nearby. There are no facilities at the break itself, so carry water and be self-sufficient. Estuary pollution is a real factor given the river outflow. Sharks are confirmed present this far from shore.

Nearby Alternatives

When Boca da Barra is too big, too rip-heavy, or the tide is wrong, Tiririca is the main Itacaré option with regular barreling banks close to town. Pontal handles SE-S swell in a more approachable open-beach format. For a harder-to-reach alternative, Jeribucaçu rivermouth holds left and right beachbreak peaks 9km out.
