Steep, punchy beachbreak lefts peel off the rocks at the north end of this forest-backed beach near Itacaré, Bahia, rewarding the walk it takes to get here. Best shape comes from a direct NE swell or a due S, with westerly winds holding the face clean. Size range is generous, working from knee-high up to double overhead, and the break handles all tides though the lefts sharpen noticeably at lower water. Intermediate to advanced surfers will find the most fun, with occasional crowd pressure on good days despite the hike. Bottom: beach. Season: year-round. Consistency: high. Do not walk the trail alone as multiple reports confirm armed robbery on the forest path between Ribeira Beach and Prainha, so go with a group or join one of the guided tours offered by agencies in Itacaré.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

A 40-minute forest hike filters most casual visitors, yet crowds still show up on pumping days. Weekends bring fewer surfers than you might expect given the quality, but the lineup can fill when swell and conditions align. Standard lineup respect applies.

Access & Facilities

Hike from Ribeira Beach, roughly 40 minutes through Atlantic forest with waterfall crossings. There is zero infrastructure at the beach itself, though a vendor occasionally sells coconut water. Parking near the trailhead is tight, especially after midday. Local agencies in Itacaré run guided tours that add safety numbers for the trail.

Nearby Alternatives

When Prainha is flat or crowded, Tiririca back in Itacaré offers reliable barreling beachbreak banks. Boca da Barra is worth the effort for a super-long right-hander when S swells fill in.
