Punchy, sucky beachbreak peaks break at the northern mouth of the Rio de Contas, accessed only by crossing the river by ferry, canoe, or paddle from Itacaré. SE to S swell at low to mid tide produces the best shape, with westerly winds keeping faces clean. The river's influence reshuffles the sandbanks constantly, so expect the peak quality to vary visit to visit. Competent intermediates and above will handle the sucky, fast sections, beginners should look elsewhere. Bottom: sand. Season: April through September. Consistency: high. Water here carries estuary pollution from the Rio de Contas, so check conditions after heavy rain and consider a rash guard or light wetsuit as a skin barrier. The boat-only access keeps crowds thin even when Itacaré's main breaks are packed, making this worth the extra logistics on a good SE swell day.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Weekends see light to empty lineups thanks to the river crossing acting as a natural filter. Access friction keeps the crowd low even during peak swell season. Localism is not flagged as an issue, but showing respect in a small, isolated lineup is standard protocol anywhere.

Access & Facilities

Cross the Rio de Contas from Itacaré's northern port by ferry, canoe, or paddling. No facilities on-site: bring water, food, and sun protection. A dirt road beyond the beach heads toward the Maraú Peninsula. Restricted parking on the Pontal side. Estuary pollution is a real concern, avoid surfing here for 48 hours after significant rainfall.

Nearby Alternatives

When Pontal's banks are off, head back to Itacaré where Tiririca delivers reliable barrels on the northern banks and Boca da Barra offers a long, fun righthander across sand. Jeribucaçu's rivermouth peaks are a longer journey but worth it for quality left-right beachbreak away from the main crowd.
