A punchy, often hollow beachbreak stretching three miles along PCH just north of Point Dume, Zuma rewards surfers who catch it dialed on a crossed-up swell, strongest from the south, with Santa Ana winds pushing offshore. S, SW, and W swells all work, with NE to E winds the ideal offshore condition. Mid tide is the sweet spot, though the wave functions across all tides. Intermediate to advanced surfers will find the most here, especially at the southern Westward section, known locally as Drainpipes, which runs heavier, hollower, and consistently bigger than it looks. Bottom: sand. Season: March through October. Consistency: high. A serious warning applies at Drainpipes: the sandbar has paralyzed at least one surfer, and big south swells grind out battering lefts that strip wetsuits. Canyon funneling from Trancas and Zuma canyons can amplify swell and generate wicked rip currents on solid swells, so know your exits before paddling out.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

The three-mile spread means crowds distribute across many peaks, keeping any one section manageable most sessions. Good days draw a crew but there is room. The local vibe is welcoming with minimal organized localism, though the beach draws heavy summer foot traffic from inland LA. Dawn patrol on solid swell days is the obvious move.

Access & Facilities

Zuma sits directly on PCH with a large pay parking lot running the length of the beach. Restrooms and facilities are on site. Water quality is generally clean but degrades after rain. Possible shark activity near Westward and the Point Dume deepwater canyon has been documented.

Nearby Alternatives

County Line, a few miles north, offers better-shaped peaks when Zuma is blown out or closed. Point Dume itself has a rocky right point on the north end for those seeking more structure, and Topanga to the south delivers long right pointbreak rides when northwest swells are running.
