A mutant wedging peak created when south swell energy refracts off the Newport Harbor jetty, The Wedge sits at the eastern end of the Balboa Peninsula in Newport Beach, California. Big S, SSW, or SW swells with NE to E offshore winds are the recipe, working best on low to mid tide when the sand sucks out and the wall goes hollow. Faces routinely exceed 20ft, breaking terrifyingly close to shore over a steep sand bottom that offers little forgiveness. This is heavy-expert territory: broken bodies are routine, boards are banned 10am-5pm during summer to protect the resident bodysurfing culture, and the crowd is competitive and unforgiving when it fires. Bottom: Sand. Season: March through October. Consistency: Medium, entirely swell-dependent. Arrive at dawn during a solid south swell if you want a window before the ban kicks in and the spectators arrive by the hundreds.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Expect a heavy crowd whenever a real south swell hits. Bodysurfers, bodyboarders, and skimboarders dominate, and the summer board ban (10am-5pm) enforces that hierarchy. The vibe can be intense. Locals take their spot seriously, and the spectator gallery adds performance pressure to an already chaotic lineup. Dawn patrol before the ban is your best window for any reasonable paddle-in attempt.

Access & Facilities

Street parking along Balboa Peninsula fills fast on surf days. Lifeguards are on duty. Water quality is fair but degrades after rain events, so check conditions post-storm. The jetty rocks are an active hazard: a wipeout that washes you toward the north jetty is genuinely dangerous. Bring a good leash if boards are permitted, but know your limits before paddling out.

Nearby Alternatives

When The Wedge is flat or the board ban is in effect, 54th Street on the south side of the east jetty offers quality sandbar rights during solid south swells. Blackie's near Newport Pier can produce long sandbar lefts on bigger south pulses, worth a check on the same swell.
