San Diego's best beachbreak earns that reputation partly because you have to work for it. Blacks sits below crumbling sandstone cliffs north of La Jolla, accessible only by a 45-minute coastal hike from Pebbly Beach, and that friction is the entire reason the lineup stays manageable. A deep submarine canyon funnels west, NW, and SW swell straight into three main peaks plus shifting phantom peaks and sneaky insiders that rearrange with every tide cycle. Best in W to NW long-period swell over 15 seconds, with E or SE offshores and low-to-mid tide for smaller surf. At size, it becomes less tide-sensitive and considerably more serious. Intermediate to advanced surfers only: when it's pumping, plan on eating sets. Bottom: sand over offshore canyon. Season: Nov-Feb peak, works year-round. Consistency: reliable when any swell has west in it. Bring water and food for the round trip, there are no facilities on the beach.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Rated heavy despite the hike, which tells you something about how good it gets. On a pumping swell, the lineup is competitive and experienced. Localism is rated "doable" but respect the peak priority and the fact that everyone earned their spot here by walking. Dawn patrol timing reduces the crowd math. Do not surf alone: the remoteness of the cliff-backed beach means help is far away if something goes wrong.

Access & Facilities

Hike north from Pebbly Beach, keeping to the coastline for roughly 45 minutes. No parking at the break, no water, no food, no shade, no facilities. Cliffs above the beach are actively eroding, do not linger under them. Water quality is typically clean but degrades after rain. Carry out everything you bring in.

Nearby Alternatives

When Blacks is blown out or too small, Windansea to the south catches similar NW swell on a reef setup with more reliable wind protection. Scripps Pier picks up the same canyon swell and can offer a faster, more accessible alternative on smaller days.
