A reef break north of Santa Cruz that delivers punchy lefts and rights when the swell cooperates, Davenport Landing sits off Highway 1 with a lined-up left on the south end and a bigger right on the north end. W, NW, and SW swells light it up best, starting at 3-5ft where it runs fun and forgiving, but cross 5ft and the wave develops a serious ledge with a hollow, powerful drop that will end your session fast if you hesitate. N or NE winds keep it clean, and the spot is partially shadowed from NW flow. Mid to high tide is optimal. Intermediate to advanced surfers will feel at home, though the break is open to all when it's small. Bottom: Reef and rock. Season: Year-round. Consistency: Hit or miss, swell-dependent. Dawn patrol on a weekday is your best shot at scoring it with room to breathe.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Weekdays, especially mornings, you may find only a handful of people out or none at all. Weekends draw Santa Cruz crowds and the lineup fills up. The local vibe is relaxed, a mix of experienced regulars who know the wave well. Basic lineup respect keeps things smooth. Expect moderate shoulder burn during busy sessions.

Access & Facilities

Head north out of Santa Cruz on Highway 1. Roadside parking on both shoulders. The walk to the water is short. No facilities on-site, so bring water and food. The area is clean oceanically, but watch the rocks on entry and exit. Sharks are a genuine, documented concern here given the local seal and whale populations. Multiple sightings on record. Stay aware, especially during dawn and dusk sessions.

Nearby Alternatives

When Davenport is flat or blown out, Santa Cruz has consistent options to the south including Steamer Lane for more swell and structure, or Pleasure Point for longer walls. Scott Creek, just up the highway, can offer a change of scenery when Davenport is maxed out.
