Windansea has been San Diego's proving ground since the 1930s, a powerful rock-and-sand reef sitting squarely in La Jolla that pulls in sets noticeably larger than nearby beaches. NW, WNW, SW, and SSW swells all find the peak, straight W swells are largely blocked by San Clemente Island. Easterly winds keep it clean, and it functions across all tides, though medium-low to high tends to organize the better walls and barrels. This is intermediate-to-advanced territory only: the crowd is heavy every day, the localism is real and competitive, and cleanup sets punish anyone caught inside without the awareness to read them. Bottom: rock, sand, eelgrass. Season: year-round, with summer SW groundswells and winter NW pulses both delivering quality. Consistency: high. Paddle out just south of the historic shack on the beach to find the channel and avoid the worst of the shorepound on entry.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

forecast services describes it accurately: San Diego Zoo without the zookeeper. Even stripping out visitors, locals alone would fill the lineup. Weekend crowds are intense. The local crew is competitive and protective. Proper etiquette and genuine skill are baseline requirements. Stink-eye is standard. Dropping in on anyone, local or not, will end your session.

Access & Facilities

Park on Neptune Avenue directly in front or on adjacent streets. Spots disappear fast when it's firing, so walk a few blocks if needed. No formal facilities on-site. The historic surf shack is a cultural landmark. Water is generally clean but degrades after rain events.

Nearby Alternatives

When Windansea is maxed out or the crowd is unbearable, the beachbreaks of Pacific Beach offer softer, more forgiving peaks on smaller SW swells. La Jolla Shores to the north provides long, mellow walls better suited to longboards and less experienced surfers on the same SW groundswells.
