Raw, powerful boulder peaks tucked into Big Sur's southernmost surf zone deliver thunderous lefthand walls when the elements finally align. A glassy NW, W, or SW swell at 4-12ft, E to NE offshores, and a medium-high tide combine to produce the best conditions. The main peak sits just north of the parking lot, a thick left that walls and allows hard carves rather than easy tubes. Cleanup sets arrive without warning and must be respected. The south peak wedges into a right on the right day. Crowds are generally mellow given the remoteness, but locals run a tight ship and solo visitors who paddle out with respect are treated reasonably. Bottom: boulder. Season: September through November. Consistency: high when stars align, but Big Sur's windows are famously brief. Great white sharks are genuinely present in these waters and have been sighted frequently by locals, which is not a rumor worth dismissing.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Locals resent drop-ins. Crowds are moderate for Big Sur's standards but a dense pack at the north peak is possible on the rare perfect day. Head to the south peak as overflow. Come solo, sit wide, wait your turn. Positioning without etiquette here will not be forgotten.

Access & Facilities

Drive north on Highway 1 from San Simeon and follow signs for Willow Creek Picnic Ground. Small car park and restrooms sit adjacent to the beach beneath the highway bridge. Kelp bulbs and tortoise-sized boulders make paddle-out look more dangerous than it is, but the rocks demand a cautious entry.

Nearby Alternatives

Big Sur Rivermouth sits further north and throws fast, thin righthand lines that go offshore in prevailing NW wind. If neither spot is cooperating and you're willing to push south, the consistent beachbreak peaks around the Salinas area offer reliable swell reception when the coast is maxed out.
